A person’s relationship with their father is an important one. Some people hate their father and others loved them. No matter how you loved or hated him, if you had any relationship at all, you’ve been affected by it. Recently my father’s health has come into question and I’ve had the time to look back and realize what I’ve lost and gained. It also calls into question how I compare to that man. And not just that man, but great men. Respectable men. This idea of the strong superlative man. Can we ever achieve what they have? And why do we try? I realize that I am not going to become my father, and the void of his absence is deep.

One strong memory is of my family and I going camping. The “Camping Family” image is an archetype of American life, and I tried to reproduce this with light and shadow. These figures, which are actually nothing, are created with darkness and the plain of light. This is a current Portrayal of how this normally happy picture has become dark and blurred.
